when I first …
when I first started learning I only ever used alternate picking which was great in a way but now if I try to just down pick I really suffer, I firmly believe PRACTISE EVERYTHING even if you think it is not challenging you just do it anyway

one step at a time, …
one step at a time, you can’t think about too many things at once! of course you want to alternate your picking but sometimes you have to lay some ground work first.

Why only down strokes Marty? Wouldn’t you want your students to work on their alternate picking at the same time? IMHO, it’s never to early to add or start making that a nature part of your playing.
