I have no clue what I’m looking at when i try to read guitar tabs can someone explain and maybe show me an example? Also I’m having trouble switching chords is there any tips you guys can tell me about?

I’ve only been playing guitar for a few weeks is it normal for me to have trouble switching chords or should I know how to do this already?

Tab consists of six lines which represent the strings of the guitar. If you were to lay your guitar in your lap and start off from the top going down, tab will match the strings as follows:

E|———- (1st string)
B|———- (2nd string)
G|———- (3rd string)
D|———- (4th string)
A|———- (5th string)
E|———- (6th string)

Now, when you hold your guitar, ready to play, you’ll notice that tab and the strings don’t match and that the two go opposite of each other. This takes a little getting used to. However, I suggest writing "1st string" next to the top line of tab, and "6th string" next to the bottom line. Try to wean yourself off of this guide once you’ve gotten the hang of it.

Numbers represent what fret you play. A "0" means open string.

E|——0—- (Play the 1st string open with no fingers touching it)

If numbers are placed one after the other, diagonally, or one of top of each other, you play each number or row from left to right, just like if you were reading a book.

Example of numbers placed one after the other:
E|–1-2-3-4—– (Play each note on the 1st string one at a time)

Numbers placed diagonally:
E|-1—–5—- (Start with 1, then move on to 3, then lastly, pick 5)
B|—-3——–

Numbers stacked on top of each other (also known as chords):

Open C chord (strum notes together):
E|—–0——
B|—–1—–
G|—–0—–
D|—–2—–
A|—–3—–
E|—–x—– <—"x" means do not play

When learning how to switch between chords, just focus on the left hand. Don’t do any strumming with the right hand just yet. What you want to do is watch where your fingers go for each chord, and to make corrections when necessary. Take two chords at a time and practice switching back and forth between them until it feels natural.

If you’re having trouble with just one chord, focus on that one only. Again, make sure that this feeling is natural and make corrections. Once you can master that one chord, then add in a chord that you have no problem forming and switch between the two.

Your fingers will eventually start to memorize where to go on their own.

I have just recently started learning guitar(By myself/book), and do like to look up tabs for all kinds of songs. My friend and his dad who has been playing acoustic a while longer than me, both agree that tabs will not help you learn guitar. They say it actually makes it harder, and think that i should stop using tabs immediately. Is there any truth to this? Because, i would hate to be making anything harder, or screwing myself over…

Some of these answers are kind of harsh. I’ve been playing guitar for 15 years, and I never learned to read sheet music. I can site read tabs, and while that can be beneficial, the truth is that you cannot go wrong by learning to read sheet music for the guitar. It will actually make you a better and more learned musician if you can read music.

To be sure, it is possible to be an amazing guitar player without reading a lick of sheet music, but it helps.

There is a program out there, called Guitar Pro 5, which plays back tabs for you in real time, but the tabs also contain standard notation. I used this program to learn sheet music, which was made easy because I could already read the tabs. There are many tab editors out there like this one, but most would probably agree that Guitar Pro 5 is the best one available, and it can do wonders for your song arranging skills and music reading skills.

I will be truthful…reading sheet music is not a necessity…but it WILL do wonders for your abilities as a musician. You should spend the time and learn it, you will be more knowledgeable about music theory and you will be more intuitive as a musician. Thats about the small and skinny of it.

I want to play/sing a solo song, but I play bass. I’ve looked up the guitar tabs, but is there a way to translate or transpose the guitar tabs into the equivalent bass tabs. (I am aware that I may need to lower the octave, but that’s fine, just how do I do it?)

To shorten my answer I did this, go on google and type this : transposing guitar tabs to bass tabs……and wala there are tons of sites that teach you how to do this. Good luck to you. It would take too long to try and explain all this to you here, hope this helps you, bye.

All I’m trying to do is take sheet music (single notes not chords) an convert it to guitar tabs.
Where can I find how to do this?
Example: a note is on the 4th line of sheet music (D) where is this on a guitar (like 3rd string, 3rd fret).
Can’t anyone answer this question?? So far I’ve received two inane answers.

guitar pro allows you to view the tab and sheet music at the same time, it allows u to download songs for free, and it allows you to in put sheet music and it shows u the tabs

I’ve seen widgets for lyrics and album art for itunes, but I frequently end up having to look for guitar tabs for the song I’m playing manually and I was wondering how one would make a widget to automatically search ultimate-guitar.com for the song I’m currently listening to. I already (kinda) know how to use Dashcode but only basically and I don’t know how to input my own stuff.

There’s a plugin for Amarok which does just that. Take a look at the code and you may be able to figure it out for iTunes.
